Now in its third year, the Sensing Technology 2012 event promises to be a must attend exhibition once again. Electrical Engineering magazine explores what this year’s show has in store for its visitors and exhibitors

Sensing Technology 2012, the only dedicated national sensors, test, measurement and instrumentation event, will be taking place at the NEC in Birmingham on 25th-26th September. This year will see the show co-located with six other exhibitions making this the biggest industrial event of 2012.

As a result of this enhanced Sensing Technology 2012 exhibition, visitors who are looking for new products or simply the latest information will be able to find everything they need under one roof – from sensors, test and measurement equipment, and other types of instrumentation, to interesting seminars and knowledgeable professionals.

Background

The event was created as an exhibition with a seminar programme in 2010 simply because there wasn’t an event like it in the UK. Those sourcing sensor products in the UK had nowhere to go to see the newest products or to find out about the latest sensor technologies.

The launch of Sensing Technology provided those looking for such products with an event in the UK for the first time, located centrally in the country. This not only gave them the chance to see the latest products and live demonstrations, but also one which enabled them to speak to engineers from a wide range of companies about their application needs or ideas.

The organisers of Sensing Technology have since discovered that visitors attend the event because they are looking for specific products. In fact, following both previous events, many exhibitors commented on how impressed they were by the knowledge held by the visitors, and explained how they had very specific requirements for very specific applications, resulting in lengthy and detailed discussions.

What to expect?

In 2012 the evolution of the exhibition has continued, offering even more to visitors and exhibitors alike. Visitors, it turned out, wanted more than just sensors – so this year the show is expanding further still, by being opened up to suppliers and manufacturers of test and measurement products and other types of instrumentation.

Once again the Seminar Suite will be another major focus of the show, providing the opportunity for visitors to hear from professional organisations about a wide range of focused areas, subjects or even views on certain topics. Following each presentation, the floor will be opened up for questions and discussions, providing the opportunity for those listening to really get involved.

On top of all these reasons to visit, this year the event is also being co-located with a number of other exhibitions – it will be held in Hall 3 of Birmingham’s NEC with MM, MEMS and NANO, with MEDIPLAS and TCT Live in Hall 3a. The PPMA show will be just a hall away.

This will result in a highly focused event which will provide visitors with quality technological information and the chance to find out about the other industry sectors in which, potentially, their products could be used.

Exhibitors

There will be a multitude of products and services on show at Sensing Technology 2012, many of which will be new to the industry. For example, as well as hosting practical demonstrations on flow and pressure sensing and control, Bronkhorst UK will be launching a Coriolis sensor/controller with ATEX/IECEx Certification for Zone 1 hazardous areas on its stand (E14).

National Instruments will also be demonstrating a selection of new products, including LabVIEW 2012, new technologies for embedded datalogging and a family of mobile applications for interacting with measurement and control systems from smart phones and tablets (stand E11).

Visitors to stand D4 will have the opportunity to view a range of new instrumentation from Impress Sensors & Systems. These include an extended range of digital pressure transmitters, multi-channel process controllers with Modbus connectivity, as well as a new digital pressure and temperature transmitter with new USB interface module.

The latest innovations in infrared temperature measurement, thermal imagers, eddy current and laser displacement measurement will be on show on Micro Epsilon’s stand (G5), where the company will be showcasing a number of products including its new thermoIMAGER TIM 400 and 450 series of inline infrared thermal imagers, and the miniature thermoMETER CSmicro infrared temperature sensor.

The exhibition will also see Burkert  display a wide range of its own specialised flow, pH, pressure, temperature and level sensors, and launch the new version of the multiCELL universal transmitter and sensor controller (stand C7). A video of the multiCELL can be viewed on www.connectingindustry.com/multicell.
