Electrical industry training courses run by SELECT, the campaigning trade body for Scotland’s electrical sector, have accreditation scoring which is above anything else in the industry.

The superlative rating – carried out by the by Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) against the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework – means that SELECT’s courses exceed in standard to anything else available from other providers.

SELECT is now planning to bring more of the 25 training courses it offers, covering all aspects of the industry, within the SQA ambit in order to provide the best possible professional training to employees of member and non-member companies.

At the moment, SELECT has had four of its courses accredited by the SQA – Design and Verification of Electrical Installations, which has been accredited since 1997, and Initial Verification, Inspection and Testing (including Periodic Testing) and Requirements for Electrical Installations, which were accredited just last year.

The Design and Verification and Inspection and Testing courses have now both been awarded a Level Seven against the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework. The Framework scores from one to 12, with 12 being at the level of a doctorate. Few vocational courses ever exceed a score of six.

Dave Forrester, SELECT’s head of technical services, said: “This puts to bed once and for all any doubts about the quality and content of SELECT’s training courses when they are compared with others in the sector. Achieving Level Seven illustrates how well these courses are regarded by impartial assessors and also the strong commitment SELECT has to training the electrical operatives of the future to the highest possible standards.”

The organisation’s managing director, Newell McGuiness, said: “SELECT has invested significantly in its training portfolio and it is gratifying to have the quality of the courses so comprehensively recognised. We will continue our efforts to raise professional standards within the sector and to give applicants to our training programmes an industry-leading experience.”

SELECT Member companies account for 90% of all electrical installation work carried out in Scotland, have a collective turnover of £1bn and provide employment for 15,000.
