The world’s most revolutionary and forward-thinking inventions in science, engineering and technology were recognised at the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Innovation Awards in Central London. A total of 15 winners were recognised for their outstanding contributions to innovation, and were presented with their prestigious awards by Gadget Show host Ortis Deley.
Many of the inventions honoured are strong examples of technology created for social development in categories such as sustainability, healthcare and transport. Double-award winner Desolenator is a sustainable water system which purifies and desalinates all forms of water through the power of the sun – which has the potential to give millions of people access to clean drinking water.
Morgan Innovation and Technology was recognised for developing ‘Salurate’, a non-invasive, needle-free, saliva test that pregnant women can take to test for pre-eclampsia in the comfort of their own homes. In addition, NATS & Lockheed Martin have developed the world’s first Air Traffic Management tool utilising a time based separation algorithm. Implemented at Heathrow Airport to optimise landing rate, it has significantly reduced delays for travellers since installed – and helped to further the field of infrastructure technology.
Other breakthrough innovations which were awarded a top prize include Metrasens and Fripp Design and Research. Metrasens has developed quasi-static magnetic measurements that can be used to detect for contraband detection in prisons – this already proving to be a commercial success. Fripp Design and Research has created ‘Picsima’, the world’s first 3D silicone printer, capable of making geometric moulds for use in industry and medicine which are usually highly costly and complex.
