While nobody likes to think of the worst happening, planning for failure is vital to ensuring business continuity in the event of the unthinkable arising.  Here Riello UPS Ltd’s general manager Leo Craig highlights why having a maintenance plan in place is key.

Like any equipment, the UPS has consumable parts that age with use. At some point during the life of a power protection device, the batteries will need replacing and other consumable components will reach the end of their recommended life span. While it is advisable to run regular checks on the UPS and battery room, having a robust maintenance plan in place is also crucial.

UPS maintenance plans are designed to provide more comprehensive cover than a warranty and a guaranteed emergency response time; defined in either working or clock hours. With Riello UPS for example you can choose between silver (12 working hours), gold (eight working hours) or platinum (same day, four clock hours) maintenance plans. These are guaranteed response times.

Having a maintenance agreement in place with a trusted technical expert also gives you 24/7 service availability and access to spares across the UK. Unlike other manufacturers for example, Riello UPS has chosen to stock all spare parts/components in various strategically placed warehouses across the UK combined with a multimillion pound stock holding at its headquarters where UPS up to 500kVA are ready for immediate dispatch.

Maintenance agreements also cover regular preventative engineer visits, firmware updates and fully comprehensive cover as well as remote monitoring and diagnosis. Agreements are available either in or out of warranty, although be aware that the ‘out of warranty’ costs can rise. Best practice would be to request a price from your UPS supplier for a fixed price maintenance plan.

If you choose to use a third party maintenance provider, make sure to check that whoever maintains your equipment is fully trained. To ensure customers access fully trained engineers, Riello UPS for example runs a Certified Engineer Programme which lists fully qualified engineers with complete access to spare parts. To achieve the status, the engineers must successfully complete thorough training on the commissioning, maintenance and servicing of Riello UPS products with regular re-assessment.

Having a solid maintenance plan in place with a trusted manufacturer or approved third party provider will give you the peace of mind that comes from emergency call out, free on-site repair or swap out, planned battery replacements and much more.
