The Highway Electrical Association (HEA) has recently launched an LED tick logo to give clients, specifiers and purchasers confidence when considering highway electrical LED products. The logo has been created exclusively for HEA-HEMSA Members.

Use of the HEA-HEMSA LED tick logo shows customers that manufacturers, and organisations placing products on the market understand and comply with all the requirements for the Specification of Highway Electrical LED Products (produced as a pan-industry initiative under the umbrella of the Lighting Liaison Group). Importantly, they will have a recorded data trail that is audited through their ISO 14001 or 9001 accreditation, or where this does not exist, through the HEA-HEMSA biennial audit.

Gareth Pritchard, HEA chief executive, said, “The amount of confusing information which exists in the lighting sector in respect of LEDs, is disturbing. Clients, particularly those in charge of public sector monies, need to be confident that they receive the quality of products they are expecting, which can be demonstrated with clear and auditable data, backed up by reputable organisations.

“A change of thinking is required as is better knowledge of this technology. For example, as a rule, when LED luminaires fail they don’t completely stop working. Also, the claims of life are based on statistical projections, rather than measurement.

“The latest work carried out by the Energy Saving Trust (Lit Up – an LED Lighting Field Trial) showed wide variations in initial lumen depreciation, some reducing by as much as 35% together with colour shifts both up and down that may be critical for traffic sign illumination.

“The introduction of the HEA-HEMSA LED tick logo provides an assurance to customers that advice, as set out by the pan-industry group, is being followed. This important step puts customers first and provides visible confirmation that HEA-HEMSA members are adopting best practice and have their data audited as part of their compliance requirements.”
