Data centres are no longer just simple storage facilities of bytes and bits. They’ve been completely transformed over the past two decades, making them more suitable for the demands of the modern-day consumer and businesses. So how do data centres work and how to do they meet the demands needed today and the future? Telehouse has explained and explored this below!

The effects of digital transformation

Change is occurring on a global scale, and there are four main elements that will affect the data centre layout. This is due to digital transformation influencing data production and cloud-based solutions becoming increasingly popular in modern day consumer technology.

The Zettabyte Eta

With the demands increasing daily, the data centres will have to handle more traffic than ever due to an increasing number of Internet of Thing devices. By 2021 it’s predicated that global data centre traffic will increase to 1.7 ZB per month. With 1 zettabyte equalling 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes, it’s the equivalent of 3.7bn x 512GB iPad Pro’s fully loaded.

The Internet of Everything

This revolutionised industry is predicated to deliver global sales of up to £8 trillion over the next 10 years which is set to fuel a 286% increase in data created by IoT devices. As the products we use on an every day basis increases, such as smart phones, watches and tablets, and consumers own and use more, so will the data that is being used and stored.

On the Edge

To ensure the most efficient user experience when it comes to businesses and customers, computers are being pushed to the edge on what they can do so they can meet the increasing demands of everyday life. With an estimated 2.4bn devices around in 2018 it’s estimated that this will increase to around 5.6bn by 2020. This estimated increase means that the demands on cloud servicing will be higher and therefore put to the test.

The Cloud

With a predicted 60-70% of all software, service and technology spending to be cloud- based by 2020, it’s clear that this is a service that needs more improvement. Due to flexibility, cost and scalability, cloud solutions will become much more popular for both business and personal use. The large providers such as Amazon, Google and Facebook will need to make sure they accommodate their ever-growing user base to meet demands.
