New out-patients facility confirmed for St Luke’s Health Facility in Market Harborough

Within weeks of opening its new regional office in Birmingham, Quartzelec, the international electrical engineering firm, is already delivering its first major order, a £1.2m mechanical and electrical contract for the new, technically advanced St Luke’s health facility in Market Harborough in Leicestershire.

The overall £7.8 million construction project is being led by construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall as main contractor, having been appointed to build the new health facility by NHS Property Services via the East Midlands Property Alliance (empa) framework.  Graham George, Quartzelec’s newly appointed Manager, will work with an initial team of at least six to oversee this project from the new Quartzelec offices at 4200 Waterside Centre, Solihull Parkway, Birmingham Business Park. This number is expected to increase to at least 20 working on-site at the height of the project. Additional members of the existing management and delivery teams will also work out of the offices on this and various other projects, as required.

Quartzelec will provide the required metered utilities provisions, heating, cooling and ventilation services, the above ground drainage, plus the building management system and controls for the new out-patient facility at St Luke’s health facility.  From an electrical perspective Quartzelec is also responsible for the LV switchboard, all lighting installation and controls, general small power installation, the structured wiring and fire alarm installation.  Closed circuit television, intercom, panic/personal attack, staff assistance and access control systems are also within the project specification along with the inclusion of solar panels.

Graham George took up the post of Manager for the new Quartzelec office at the start of the January. He has excellent industry contacts and over 30 years’ senior M&E building services and business management experience. This includes having held key roles with a major electrical wholesaling business, several roles with Interserve, and as the MD of his own successful M&E business. His task now is to use the successful business model Quartzelec has developed and implemented in establishing its Manchesterand Leeds based M&E contracting businesses and foster relationships with both new and existing blue-chip construction and property refurbishment clients across the Midlands and Southern England.

“We already have a number of large and active customers with both new build and renovation projects in Birmingham and the surrounding area; so opening this office means we are better placed to win and professionally service their requirements across the region,” explained Graham George. “In early 2015 Quartzelec opened its Leeds office and within a year it was already exceeding expectations and accounting for almost £2.5m of new business. My role is to repeat that success here in Birmingham. Securing the St Luke’s health facility contract was the perfect start and means that we’ll quickly have to expand our local workforce of skilled M&E engineers and support staff to meet project requirements.”

“For the third consecutive year we have seen sales and delivery requirements for our building services and electrical contracting business across the UK increase by well over 50% to more than £24m,” added Martin Broughton, General Manager for Quartzelec’s Manchester-based contracting operation.  “We’ve set ambitious sales plans for theBirmingham office which will help bridge the geographical gap back to our successful Northern operations by supporting the work we are currently completing in London and by driving our expansion across the Midlands and the South.”

Quartzelec continues to secure a steady stream of M&E design, delivery and support contracts, many of which are prestigious landmark projects. Each contract typically includes the delivery of complex and integrated electrical, heating, water, ventilation, communications, building management and lighting systems. Recent project wins in theBirmingham area or projects that will be managed from this office include: Wilton’s Music Hall, Northampton Shopping Centre, Friars Mill and the car park for the RiversideRetail Park.  Other projects include work at BBC Birmingham and solutions currently being provided for Wolverhampton Council.

Quartzelec has an annual turnover in excess of £60m and a heritage that stretches back more than 80 years. The company delivers design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance and service solutions to customers operating across a broad range of industrial and commercial sectors.
