Morgan Sindall Professional Services (MSPS), the multidisciplinary design consultancy, has been appointed to the National Grid’s FEED framework to support the improvement of electrical transmission systems across England and Wales.

MSPS will provide civil and high-voltage electrical design support to the future projects. It has been assigned to Lot 2 of the framework, which will cover the cable system front-end engineering design (FEED).

Improvements to the National Grid electrical infrastructure are required to maintain a resilient and reliable transmission system. This will cover working on projects with a voltage range from 275kV to 400kV and the upgrading of high voltage cabling assets, undergrounding of overhead lines and construction of sealing end compounds, tunnels and electrical substations.

Planned National Grid projects include the new 400kV Bramford to Twinstead Tee connection, the Hinkley Point C connection project and the 14km 400kV North London Reinforcement project.

Alwyn Hanekom, sector director for utility services at MSPS said: “MSPS was chosen for its relevant experience and the ability to demonstrate knowledge in high-voltage cable design, civil and structural sub-station design, temporary works engineering, as well as exhibiting the creative thinking required to deliver bespoke solutions to complex projects.”

Building Information Modelling (BIM), MSPS attended a one day workshop along with other consultants and suppliers to assist the National Grid on developing and implementing a sound strategy to facilitate compliance with the government mandate that determines all public projects work within a BIM stage 3 environment by 2016

“This is an excellent opportunity for MSPS to demonstrate our capability to deliver innovative solutions and help set new technical, safety and sustainability standards based on our ‘design for construction’ philosophy,” concluded Alwyn.
