HBM is running an on-line webinar on 11th December to update engineers on key aspects of testing electric motors and inverters in the electric drive train. The webinar will focus on increasing the significance of power and efficiency measurements in electric drives through simultaneous and dynamic acquisition of mechanical and electrical signals. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session with each half of the webinar lasting 30 minutes.

HBM believes that electric drive trains and electrically driven vehicles will play an increasingly important part in transportation that will become significant when the range of electric cars is increased. The key to achieving this goal is to markedly improve the efficiency of the electric drive train including the inverter and electric motor.

However, standard methods used for performance testing and efficiency measurement of electric drives give inadequate results. HBM has developed an innovative eDrive testing solution based on its T12 torque sensor and Genesis HighSpeed data acquisition system to enable the synchronous, dynamic measurement of mechanical and electrical signals.

This ensures the continuous storage of raw data allowing live analyses for determining active and reactive power as well as energy conversion efficiency. It is also possible to carry out further, more detailed analyses of such aspects as the fundamental and switching frequencies, air-gap moment, slip, iron loss, and control behaviour.  

Using powerful mathematical functions and a formula database, HBM’s eDrive concept can undertake detailed analyses that currently require separate maths packages.
