Students from Gower College Swansea (GCS) were treated to a site visit to Swansea University Bay Campus’ residential development on Tuesday 10 January thanks to Swansea-based RDM Electrical and Mechanical Services, helping the students to plan their futures for a career in the electrical and mechanical services industry.
The level two construction students were welcomed by RDM to view the works the company is completing for VINCI Construction UK, based around the mechanical and electrical works at the residential development phase 1C site.
Following a site induction by VINCI Construction UK, where health and safety issues were explained, students were shown around the site to learn about construction techniques and methods. The operation of the mechanical installation was also explained and demonstrated to the group, including domestic water systems, LTHW (low temperature hot water) heating systems, mechanical extract systems and plant Rooms.
Chris Phillips, project manager at RDM, and Mark Crouch, mechanical engineer at RDM, were also on hand to discuss with students future training in the industry and potential career paths.
Chris Phillips commented:
“Providing site visits for local students is really important for the industry, as it introduces keen young people into what could be their future career. We hope the visit gave the students a better understanding of the industry as a whole, as well as the opportunity to see a larger scale installation for the first time. We hope it was encouraging for them to see how the skills they are currently learning can be used when they find work placements in September.”
Kelly Hinder, construction lecturer at Gower College Swansea said:
“We were made to feel very welcome during the site visit and nothing was too much for the staff at RDM. They really inspired the students to work in the electrical/mechanical sector and the students left the site really motivated. I think most of the students originally wanted to go down the domestic avenue for work, but now they are all talking about working commercially onsite.”
RDM has secured approximately £15m of work on the Swansea University Bay Campus, representing a significant opportunity for the company to offer employment and training opportunities for local people.
