The electrical industry faces a critical skills shortage, with thousands of positions remaining unfilled across the UK. But for every challenge, there are individuals ready to step up and power the future
Carhartt’s NexGen Ambassador campaign wanted to identify two exceptional young electricians who embody the determination, skill and work ethic that defines the trades and they found them in Remi Newman and Charlie Weston.

The NexGen Ambassador programme was designed by Carhartt to highlight the opportunities available in electrical trades while supporting those who demonstrate exceptional commitment to their craft. Both winners, who receive exclusive workwear packages and financial support for their training providers, serve as examples of the diverse pathways into skilled trades and the rewarding careers that await those willing to invest in developing their expertise.
“The electrical industry needs passionate, skilled people who understand that this work isn’t just a job – it’s a calling,” says Lisa Meijer, Senior PR & Communication Specialist for Carhartt EMEA/PAC. “Remi and Charlie demonstrate exactly the kind of commitment and enthusiasm that will drive our industry forward. They’re not just learning a trade; they’re preparing to become the backbone of Britain’s electrical infrastructure.”
Rising Star: Remi Newman
At just 20 years old, Remi Newman has already distinguished herself as one of the most promising electrical apprentices in her cohort. Currently in her second year of training with a leading electrical contractor in Manchester, Remi’s journey into the trades began with a simple realisation: she wanted work that would challenge her every day and make a tangible difference to people’s lives.
“I’ve always been drawn to problem-solving and working with my hands,” explains Remi. “When I started looking at career options, electrical work stood out because it combines technical knowledge with practical skills. Every day brings something different – whether it’s troubleshooting a complex circuit or installing systems that will serve a building for decades.”
Remi’s path wasn’t conventional. After completing her A-levels, she initially considered university but found herself more excited by the prospect of earning while learning and developing skills that would be immediately applicable in the real world. Her decision to pursue an electrical apprenticeship has proven prescient, with her tutors consistently praising her technical aptitude and professional approach.

“What sets Remi apart is her attention to detail and her willingness to go the extra mile,” notes her training supervisor. “She doesn’t just want to complete tasks; she wants to understand the why behind every procedure. That curiosity and thoroughness will serve her well throughout her career.”
As she progresses through her apprenticeship, the exclusive Carhartt workwear package will provide her with professional-grade gear designed to withstand the demands of electrical work while keeping her comfortable and protected on site.
“Having quality workwear isn’t just about looking professional – though that matters,” Remi explains. “It’s about having gear you can trust when you’re working in challenging conditions. Whether I’m crawling through tight spaces or working outdoors in all weather, I need clothing that won’t let me down.”
Charlie Weston
Charlie Weston’s route into electrical work reflects the diverse pathways that lead to skilled trades careers. At 24, he brings a unique perspective shaped by previous experience in retail management before discovering his true calling in electrical installation and maintenance.
“I spent three years in retail after leaving school, and while I learned valuable skills about customer service and team management, I knew it wasn’t my long-term path,” Charlie reflects. “I wanted work that would give me a sense of accomplishment at the end of each day – something where I could see the direct result of my efforts.”
That realisation led Charlie to research apprenticeship opportunities, ultimately securing a position with a commercial electrical contractor specialising in industrial installations. His background in customer-facing roles has proven surprisingly valuable in his new career, particularly when working on occupied premises where clear communication with clients is essential.
“The industry is evolving rapidly, especially with the push towards sustainable energy solutions,” Charlie notes. “I want to be at the forefront of that change. Solar installations, battery storage systems, electric vehicle charging infrastructure – these are the technologies that will define electrical work in the coming decades.”
His proactive approach to professional development caught the attention of his training provider, who nominated him for the NexGen Ambassador programme.
Supporting the Next Generation
The NexGen Ambassador campaign represents more than recognition for individual achievement; it’s part of Carhartt’s broader commitment to supporting skilled trades education and development. Each winner receives a comprehensive workwear package featuring Carhartt’s latest innovations in protective and performance clothing, designed specifically for the demands of electrical work.
Beyond the workwear packages, the NexGen Ambassador programme also included a financial contribution to the winners’ training providers. This support helps ensure that educational institutions can continue offering high-quality programmes that prepare the next generation of skilled electricians for successful careers.
“This recognition from Carhartt is incredibly motivating,” says Remi. “It reinforces that I’ve made the right choice in pursuing electrical work and gives me confidence as I continue developing my skills. I’m excited about the opportunities ahead and grateful for the support that will help me reach my potential.”
