Hager has introduced a free technical specification guide for prefabricated wiring systems covering the requirements of BS8488:2009+A1:2010.
Says Steve York, product manager at Hager: “While it is agreed that pre-fabriacted wiring systems are faster and easier to install, some prefabricated wiring systems have been associated with serious safety issues, such as reversed polarity, under rated couplers and incorrectly sized wiring sections.”
The 28-page guide details specification, competency to certify products, application and system design. It also covers the individual products within a typical prefabricated system and what needs to be considered in their specification.
Says York: “Prefabricated wiring systems are becoming increasingly popular as they save significant time on site and free up skilled labour for more value added activities. The requirements of BS8488, however, are onerous and need to be if the installation is to meet the requirements of BS7671:2008+A1:2011 wiring regulations.
“Liability for the installation could ultimately rest with the specifier who has to ensure that the different elements such as distribution boards, cabling, installation couplers, marshalling boxes and luminaires all comply individually to the relevant British Standards, and that collectively the system complies to BS8488:2009+A1:2010.”
