Cable management from Unitrunk’s RIS (Rapid Installation Systems) range of robust and simple to install solutions has been used in the £41 million transformation of Leeds City Council’s Merrion House building.

In a scheme designed by BDP Architects and delivered by BAM Construction, Merrion House has been refurbished, remodelled and extended as part of the Council’s asset optimisation programme. The completed project will provide c.170,000 square feet of office space, including an additional 50,000 square feet thanks to a six-storey extension.

Cat A and B electrical fit out for both the refurbishment and extension elements of the building were delivered by Electrical contractor, G&R Electrical, and the company selected Unitrunk’s RIS Uniklip cable tray and Easy Connect cable basket to help fast track the programme, along with Unitrunk single compartment trunking.

G&R Electrical started the electrical installation on the ninth floor, working down the building before returning to fit out the 10th floor plant room. Unitrunk’s Easy Connect cable basket provided the ideal solution for ease and speed of installation in the confined ceiling voids and was used for all data cabling, fire alarm, security, building management systems, low voltage and extra low voltage cabling.

Unitrunk’s Uniklip cable tray was installed as risers through the central core and split into three to be routed across the back wall of each wing. From here, a network of single compartment Unitrunk cable trunking was installed enabling power and lighting cabling to be distributed to every area of the office layout.

Gary Ineson, director at G&R commented: “The range of cable management solutions and sizes of cable tray, basket and trunking available from Unitrunk made it easier for us to tailor the installation to meet the demands of different parts of the building.

“Unitrunk’s Easy Connect cable basket and Uniklip cable tray reduced installation times by about a third, which was critical to managing a project of this size and complexity.”
