Rexel UK has welcomed news of a new £35m package of funding to boost uptake of ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs)
Announced by Transport Minister John Hayes this October (2016), the funding will go towards a £20m competition to help councils roll out charging points
for low-emission taxis and a £2.5m funding scheme for charging points in residential streets where there is no off-street parking.
The pot also includes a £7.5million workplace charging scheme, due to be launched this autumn, which will be open to eligible private and public sector workplaces to support the installation of charging structure for their staff and fleet use. This is in addition to a £3.75m scheme to provide 20 per cent off the cost of a qualifying electric motorcycle or scooter, up to a maximum of £1,500.
The £35m is part of the government’s pledged £600m investment to support the uptake of greener vehicles and work towards making nearly every new car and van in the UK zero emission by 2050.
Michael Fereday at Rexel Energy Solutions, comments: “This is fantastic news and another powerful step in the right direction in what has already proven to be an unprecedented year of growth for the ULEV industry.
“While once a niche market, the reality is that the ULEV is fast coming into the mainstream as an incredibly attractive proposition for the business owner and consumer; what with the benefits of a reduced price point, tax exemptions and benefits – not to mention the drastically reduced running cost.
“For the shrewd installer then, the recommendation is to take stock and diversify into the EV charging realm promptly. After all, as the demand for ULEVs increases so will the charging need, making this one a solid new revenue stream to tap into.”
