Saft has delivered 4,000 nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery packs to Spain’s IED Green Power.

The specialist electronics manufacturer for the wind energy sector has selected Saft’s rechargeable AA sized VHT batteries to power its new generation LVD waterproof LED emergency lighting units (ELUs) for installation in wind generators, where the harsh conditions prevent the reliable operation of traditional lighting systems.

Each waterproof LVD unit, rated IP65 and IK05, will be powered by a pack of ten VHT cells providing a nominal voltage of 12V and a capacity of 1.1Ah. Current projections indicate that Saft will deliver over 20,000 battery packs per year over the ten year product life

Saft’s VHT batteries are well suited for use with wind turbines, where operating temperatures can drop to -30°C and climb to 50°C.

Stephane Senyarich, Saft’s development engineer for lighting applications said, “It’s the ability of Saft’s Ni-MH cells to operate in extreme conditions which have enabled IED Green Power to develop this new emergency lighting solution for the wind turbine sector. Wind energy is a fast growing market and we hope to help ensure the security and reliability of its emergency lighting requirements for many years to come.”
