FICTION- Someone is responsible, although I’ve no idea whom. It’s not me !
FACT – Accountability & Responsibility for the day to day operational status must be a named individual. Can you name that person today?
FICTION- Surely we have an automatic power protection system, that’s tested
FACT – Where are the test reports proving that it has been tested regularly ?
FICTION- We don’t need a generator power protection system, we’ve got UPS
FACT – No Generator ?!… You don’t have a genuine power protection system.
FICTION – Power cuts don’t happen here ; we’re safe
FACT – Power Cuts can happen anywhere, anytime. The GRID is under pressure
FICTION – Brown outs & spikes don’t bother our IT servers, not my problem
FACT – IT servers can take hours to re-boot- losing production and profit
FICTION – I’m told we have two supplies, A & B so we don’t require generators
FACT – HV rings do fail. Breakers do trip out. UPS systems do require generators backup for genuine Power Continuity. Having A&B feeds is a start, now upgrade.
FICTION – We do have an A & B feed so we’re ok….yes?
FACT – No, you’re not OK. Static Switches are the only way to ensure Power Continuity. Of course these do need to be backed up by automatic generators
FICTION – It doesn’t matter what servers we use, they all have the same spec
FACT – NO they don’t. There is an industry standard of a minimum 20 mS hold up time for servers , yet, if this is not specified it can vary widely ;together with degradation over time, causing servers to fail. Has this ever been tested by your IT dept? Probably not.
