UK Power Networks has received international recognition for the continuous advanced development of the power grid it operates across London, the South East and East of England.

The electricity distribution company has moved up to second place in SP Group’s Smart Grid Index, a measurement of the smartness of power utilities around the world. The index measures seven key factors including the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind and solar power and the satisfaction of customers during the transition to a smart grid model.

The index analysed 75 utilities around the globe, with UK Power Networks now claiming the number one position in the UK and Europe.

Barry Hatton, director of asset management at UK Power Networks, said: “We aim to be a leader in innovation and collaboration to ensure we secure the low-carbon economy that’s best for society. By working collaboratively, sharing good practice and by keeping our customers at the heart of our approach, we aim to deliver a smart grid for all.

“We’re delighted our work has been recognised in the Smart Grid Index. We are committed to collaborating and innovating to achieve our vision of being the leading distribution system operator.”

The ranking comes on the back of the company’s Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI’s) International Edison Award win earlier this year in recognition of the company’s innovative work in enabling the low carbon transition, including the development of a smart grid.
