This is said by the company to be the UK’s leading specialist cardiothoracic hospital and the country’s main heart and lung transplant centre has recently invested in two high-efficiency Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems to support its highly advanced Siemens Artis Zee multi-purpose medical scanner.

Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust purchased two transformer-based 250kVA Borri B9000FXS UPS systems to provide reliable and efficient back-up power during critical patient scanning procedures especially during fluoroscopy and full acquisition phases of the Artis Zee.

In order to comply with stringent design regulations from Siemens, the UPS units from the company had to meet design specifications, which would allow the equipment to operate at full potential even during a power failure without affecting image quality.

Drawing on its extensive technical expertise spanning over 80 years the company has worked in close collaboration with a third party contractor, Nigel Thompson (now of T. Clarke East) to design and develop the UPS systems in accordance with Siemens parameters, with custom built switchgear, to allow full automatic operation of the facility.

Not only are the new UPS systems providing Papworth Hospital with reliable back-up power but the highly advanced input characteristics of the B9000FXS units means that they can also be powered by a single 300kVA standby diesel generator, bringing significant cost saving advantages.

Mr Thompson said: ‘In an environment where available back-up power could be a case of life or death, choosing the right UPS system was absolutely critical. Borri was able to offer us a bespoke UPS solution customised to fit in with our exact operational and design specifications. Papworth Hospital has been delighted with the performance of the UPS and is even more thrilled that Borri was also able to provide a solution that delivers exceptional efficiency and long term cost savings.”

The companies FXS UPS range has retained its top position on the Energy Technology List (ETL) and has also recently been independently certified by TÜV NORD Cert as being able to achieve over 95 percent efficiency even at part load, whilst operating in Online Double Conversion (VFI) mode.
