Megaman plays it cool at the Savoy Hotel

Megaman has supplied its MR16 LED lamps to the Savoy Hotel in London for a refurbishment of the corridors. In December 2007, the hotel was closed to undergo a £220M refit and a new energy-efficient system that reduced the hotel’s reliance on the national electricity grid by approximately 20% and increased reuse and recycling.  As sustainability is a core value for The Savoy, the lamp changeover helps the hotel to conserve energy and reduce the overall impact of their operations on the environment, under the guidance of Fairmont’s Sustainability Partnership Programme.

The new design features a Thames Foyer with a winter garden gazebo under a stained-glass cupola with natural light, which is the venue for late-night dining, the hotel’s afternoon tea, a new teashop and a patisserie. There is also a glass-enclosed fitness gallery with pool, gym and spa is located above the Savoy Theatre and the Beaufort Bar. The rooms are decorated in period styles harmonised with the adjacent hallways, and they retain the built-in wardrobes and bedroom cabinets.

Following the refurbishment, the corridors were getting very warm despite the fact that there was no heating in that area. It soon became clear that it was the lighting causing the problem so a solution was required that not only solved the heat problem but also matched the other criteria of the hotel, namely continuing the high energy savings whilst ensuring that the aesthetics of the corridors were in keeping with the surrounding décor.

Mark Gee, from specialist lighting supplier Lamp Spec, was approached to help solve the problem and he suggested replacing the 35W Halogen MR16’s with Megaman’s 6W MR16 2400K LED lamps. The Megaman lamps were agreed and the illumination from these ultra warm white lamps offers a traditional warm feel which complements the rich colour scheme and wood mouldings. But the good news doesn’t end there, as annual savings 142kw per year will be achieved and some 77,000 Kg’s of CO2, with a monetary saving of £20K on energy consumption following the lamp changeover.

Mark Gee, owner of Lamp Spec, commented: “The Megaman ‘Ultra’ Warm White MR16’s were perfect as their colour complimented the Savoy’s colour scheme whilst offering a far cooler solution in the corridors. Energy consumption has been reduced by 85% and payback on the initial expenditure achieved in under 9 months”.
