Managing waste and increasing service life at recycling plant

Legrand is helping to reduce the amount of waste that’s needlessly sent to landfill after providing the cable management for a new IVC (In Vessel Composting) plant in Bolton.

The 90m x 60m facility is part of Greater Manchester’s Recycling and Waste Management Contract with Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) and Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester). Designed to recycle garden and kitchen waste into compost products that can be used as soil improvers, the new plant operates in 100% humidity which called for a specialist cable management specification.

Explained Nigel Leaver from Legrand’s cable management business: “Environmental conditions within the plant mean there is an increased risk of rust and corrosion for any metallic fittings and equipment, so the cable management infrastructure for the complex network of mains and small power cabling required a heavily galvanised cable ladder and cable tray.”

The project’s mechanical and electrical design building services company, SES, specified Legrand’s Swifts deep galvanised cable ladder and cable tray. Legrand has an in-house galvanising plant in Scarborough and uses a silicon-rich steel for its deep galvanised cable management systems that attracts and retains more zinc, doubling the life expectancy of the product as compared to hot dip galvanised products in the same environment.

SES used Legrand’s Swifts perforated steel cable tray to feed small power cables to the machinery and to the plant’s fire alarm system. For the power distribution network, Swifts cable ladder was used to carry the plant’s heavier mains cabling and this was installed on a 316-grade stainless steel channel with rubber insulation at every point of contact to avoid the potential for electrochemical corrosion due to cross-contamination of metals.

Nigel added: “The new plant at Bolton will help to ensure that compostable waste does not end up in landfill and by using our deep galvanised cable management the client has ensured a robust installation without the additional costs associated with stainless steel.”
