Lucy Switchgear, working in low and medium voltage, secondary power distribution solutions, has been awarded a two year contract with Western Power Distribution (WPD) worth in excess of quarter of a million pounds. Under the contract Lucy Switchgear will provide WPD with combined Heavy Duty Cut Outs (HDCOs) and CT Chambers.

The key requirement of the tender was to introduce a single product type that removes the need for a separate CT panel and that standardises metering chambers across WPD’s South West and Midlands regions.

Using its engineering expertise Lucy Switchgear re-configured the design of its existing CT Chamber to incorporate a traditional style test terminal block and mounted the different elements on a single backboard. This speeds up the installation process as it avoids the need to connect separate units together on site and maintains the test environment that the meter operators are familiar with, keeping the error risk to a minimum and removing the need for retraining. The integrated solution provides a neater, more uniform look for the whole unit.

Commenting Ian Stephenson, Lucy Switchgear’s product marketing manager, said: “As a supplier with a reputation for delivering bespoke solutions to our customers needs, Lucy Switchgear were ideally placed to provide the right solution for Western Power Distribution. Using our in-house design expertise we were able to create rapid prototypes for client approval and to cost effectively deliver the technical specifications of the contract within the tight timescales. We were able to provide a range of options, working closely with our suppliers to provide the right solution for the customer.”

The contract, which began in June 2014, will have the option of a 2 year extension at the end of the current term.
