In this newsletter we are highlighting our stainless-steel wall mount enclosure capability, notably the EJ, Eclipse, HYJ and HYW families
Stainless steel is environmentally neutral and inert. Type 304 stainless steel is the most common grade; it is not magnetic and it is less electrically and thermally conductive than carbon steel. It has a higher corrosion resistance than painted mild steel. The premium 316L grade is commonly used in chemical and petrochemical industry, in food processing, pharmaceutical equipment, medical devices, in potable water distribution, wastewater treatment plants and marine applications.
The addition of 2 – 3% molybdenum provides greater corrosion resistance against localised corrosive attack by chlorides and to general corrosion by reducing acids than 304. 316L grade is the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel. The great majority of Hammond’s stainless-steel enclosures are available in both 304 and 316L grade material. With today’s increasing emphasis on sustainability and the environment, it is also good to know that stainless steel is one of the most, if not the most, recyclable metal on earth with more than 85% being recycled.

The IP66 EJ family
The 22-strong EJ family is sealed to IP66, meet NEMA Types 3R, 12, 13 and 4X, and is designed for use as an instrument enclosure, an electric, hydraulic or pneumatic control housing, electrical junction box or terminal wiring enclosure. The sizes range from 102mm x 102mm x 76mm to 406mm x 356mm x 254mm and all are suitable for indoor or outdoor installation where protection against water and dust is required.
- Available in both 304 and 316L stainless steel
- Natural stainless steel with a smooth brushed finish
- 22 sizes from 102mm x 102mm x 76mm to 406mm x 356mm x 254mm
- They are UL listed, sealed to IP66, and meet NEMA Types 3R, 12, 13 and 4X
- They have a full height continuous stainless steel hinge that gives 180° opening for unobstructed access
- Closure is by way of a tool operated quarter turn fastener
- All sizes have welded, full width mounting tabs
- All sizes have a seamless, poured in place sealing gasket
- All seams are continuously welded with a smooth finish and the units are supplied without knockouts, cutouts, or holes
- Threaded weld studs are provided for mounting inner panels
- A formed lip on the enclosure excludes flowing liquids and contaminants
- A bonding stud is provided on the door and a grounding stud is provided on the enclosure
- Many standard accessories are available: swing panels, terminal kits and padlock kits.
The IP66 Eclipse family
The 59-strong IP66 Eclipse family continues the EJ family design and features into larger standard sizes – up to 1219mm x 914mm x 406mm. There are numerous options of closing mechanisms, doors with observation windows, swing frames and DIN rail mounting kits within the Eclipse family, so specifiers have a wide base of standard products to choose from before asking us to modify the enclosure to suit their project.

The IP69/69K HYJ and HYW families
For the ultimate in environmental protection, the HYJ and HYW families are the solution if equipment is going to be installed in a manufacturing area where maintaining hygiene standards and avoiding contamination are the two most important requirements – food processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing are two obvious examples. Our UL and NSF Approved HYJ IP69/IP69K 304 stainless steel enclosures have been designed to ensure that they will withstand regular high temperature, high pressure washdown and have no areas where contaminants can gather.
- Complies with NEMA 3R, 12, 4, 4X and IEC 60529, IP69/69K
- Five sizes from 202mm x 124mm x 102mm to 416mm x 338mm x 203mm
- Symmetric rectangular design means that the units can be surface mounted either vertically or horizontally to suit the application.
- All sides slope to ensure that water quickly drains off after spray cleaning.
- The HYJ cover is secured to the body with either four or six crevice-free hex head bolts (depending on the size), fitted with a silicone washer to eliminate potential dirt traps
- The distinctive blue “hygiene” coloured silicone gasket is fitted beyond the door edges, so that there are no crevices in which dirt can collect.
- The blue gasket, which makes contaminants more visible, can be easily removed for cleaning or replacement.
- To reduce crevices and unnecessary surfaces to eliminate spaces for bacterial growth, there are no slotted screw heads, quarter turn latches or welded mounting brackets.
- To eliminate difficult to clean areas behind the enclosure, it is mounted on standoffs
The IP69/69K HYW family
The HYW family extends our IP69/IP69K product capability, offering larger sizes than the HYJ family, giving an increased design choice to the system integrator.
- 18 sizes from 406mm x 406mm x 203mm to 1219mm x 914mm x 406mm..
- 25° sloped top stops water pooling and provides a potential area for control mounting.
- Internal hinge design and door-edge mounted silicone gasket allow for easy cleaning in hose-down environments.
- Complies with UL 508A and cUL Type 3R, 4, 4X and 12, cUL Type 3R, 4, 4X and 12 standards
- Sealed to IP69/IP69K
- Hygienic 316 stainless steel quarter turn door latches require use of tool for opening to prevent unauthorised access.
- Interior hinges provide 105 degree opening and are easily removed to reverse the door swing or improve on-site access.
