LED lights have rapidly gained popularity as the new standard in lighting technology, replacing higher-energy halogen lightbulbs and T5/T8 fluorescent lamps. The shift away from these older technologies is driven by their detrimental environmental impact and proven negative health effects. Fluorescent lights, in particular, pose various disadvantages, including the presence of hazardous mercury and phosphorus, leading to environmental contamination upon breakage or disposal. Moreover, the quality of fluorescent bulbs can contribute to health issues such as migraines due to the characteristic “flicker” and has been linked to depression, reduced productivity, and eyestrain.

In response to these concerns, the UK has enforced a ban on T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps, along with halogen pins, which were phased out altogether as of September 2023. This regulatory move aims to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1.26 million tonnes annually, aligning with environmental goals and the pursuit of a “greener” future. The adoption of LED lights is highlighted as a key solution, with their long life-span, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness making them an attractive alternative. Leading industry voices, recommend collaboration with lighting experts to ensure the implementation of high-quality, cost-effective, and energy-efficient lighting solutions.

In a related context, the EU/UK’s RoHS directives restrict the use of hazardous substances in electronic equipment, with a notable impact on lighting products. Mercury, commonly found in fluorescent lighting, is subject to stringent regulations. Simultaneously, the Single Lighting Regulation (SLR) complements these efforts by phasing out inefficient products, contributing to environmental protection and public health. These regulations collectively prioritize the adoption of climate-friendly, sustainable lighting practices.
