The Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) has submitted its response to the Education Select Committee consultation on ‘Apprenticeships and traineeships for 16 to 19 year olds’.

Carolyn Mason, ECA head of education and training, said, “We reiterated that the Government should allow industries that already have a strong working model to continue to use it and that not-for-profit or charitable training managers should be exempt from funding delivery reforms.”

The Government’s proposed reforms would hand responsibility for much of the administration of taking on an apprentice direct to employers cutting out the training managers.

Carolyn continued, “We submitted that larger companies often have the capacity to benefit from such flexibility but our industry is dominated by smaller employers and the significant increase in bureaucracy would deter them from taking on apprentices.” She concluded, “We welcomed the opportunity for our arguments to be included in an influential select committee report.”
