ABB announced the launch of ABB Ability Field Information Manager (FIM) 3.5, a vendor-neutral platform for automated field device firmware updates
The new software helps industrial operators reduce maintenance work from days to hours while strengthening cybersecurity compliance across increasingly complex multi-vendor device fleets.
As industries accelerate digitalization, engineering and maintenance teams face growing challenges managing thousands of connected field devices across multiple networks, protocols and suppliers. FIM 3.5 addresses this complexity through unified device management, automated bulk firmware updates and support for open standards including Ethernet-APL, FDI and PA-DIM, enabling plants to improve operational efficiency, reduce manual workloads and maintain secure, reliable operations.
A key innovation in FIM 3.5 is the vendor-neutral capability for automated bulk firmware updates. Traditionally, updating large numbers of field devices has required engineers to identify, download and install firmware individually for each device. ABB’s FIM 3.5 automates this process, helping plants maintain cybersecurity compliance, reduce operational risk and minimize maintenance workloads. Replacing time-consuming manual device management frees personnel to focus on high-value tasks such as process optimization and preventative maintenance that enhance plants’ efficiency and sustainability.
Built on Field Device Integration (FDI), FIM 3.5 supports PROFINET, PROFIBUS, HART and EtherNet/IP field networks, enabling consistent device management across complex industrial environments. Engineers can quickly connect to devices, access configuration and diagnostics data and manage lifecycle activities through a single graphical interface that gives instant visibility of status and condition for all connected devices plus control over scheduling automated updates.
The software also incorporates the industry’s first native FDI-based Software Update Plugin (SUP), which allows device manufacturers to provide standardized firmware packages containing update logic and multiple firmware versions. Simplifying automatic bulk updates and enabling background execution, this reduces staff workloads and disruption to plant operations while simplifying maintenance planning.
FIM 3.5 is fully integrated as the native device management tool in ABB Ability System 800xA and Symphony Plus DCS systems, providing additional productivity benefits including automated loop checks during commissioning and streamlined device lifecycle management throughout plant operations. By combining advanced device management capabilities with seamless integration into established control environments, FIM 3.5 supports ABB’s Automation Extended approach to innovation with continuity, helping customers evolve their operations without disruption.
